Japanese Cedar, Plume Cedar
The dense blue-green needles on these trees or shrubs often turn bronze in winter. Drooping branch tips look like fat fingers and are dotted with globe-shaped cones. Peeling bark is reddish brown.

Only one or two species make up this genus of evergreen, coniferous trees from the forests of China and Japan. The dense foliage is attractive, as is the reddish brown bark.

Japanese cedar ( Cryptomeria japonica ) Slow developing evergreen; green foliage turns red-bronze in autumn. Chinese juniper ( Juniperus chinensis ) Leafy evergreen, sea green in color.

Although it is called the Japanese cedar, it is not a true cedar (Cedrus). It has compact blue-green foliage and peeling red bark. It has small needles 3/4 inch or smaller.
