If Japanese maples produced no fall color display, I would still want to use them in the landscape because of their elegance and beauty.

Several European and Japanese maples have been introduced to the United States as ornamentals. The only other genus of the family is Dipteronia, consisting of two species indigenous to China.

The leaves are similar to some of the Japanese maples, making them a popular choice for Northwest gardens. They can grow in full sun provided they receive extra irrigation. I have several growing in my own garden; I would not be without one.
