The Japanese plum yew (Cephalotaxus harringtonia) growing in my garden came from Wayside Gardens in Hodges, S.C.

 


Japanese plums grow 15-20 feet with a somewhat wider spread. They produce round to heart-shaped fruit ranging in color from green to yellow and brilliant red to deep purple-black.

Japanese plums actually originated in China but were brought to this country via Japan in the 1800s. They are not quite as sweet as European plums, though their flesh is much juicier.

1-2" yellow fruit taste like an orange flavored pear. A very tropical-looking evergreen tree growing to 15-25' tall.

Location
Japanese plum yew is native to Japan, Korea and eastern China, where it grows in the forest understory.
