Description
Podocarpus macrophyllus 'Maki' is a slow growing evergreen shrub that can reach 8-10' in height and 3-4' in width with a conical to dome shaped growth habit.

This dwarf evergreen is usually grown as a round shrub, but can be grown as a small tree. It's heavy dark green leaves are linear with spiny tips. Leaves turn to a reddish-green tint in winter.

Evergreen conifer, tree/srub, to 65 ft (20 m) in its habitat, but more shurby in cultivation, branches ascending or horizontal. Bark reddish-brown. New growth reddish.

The Class Pinopsida includes mostly trees, such as hemlocks, firs, spruces, larches, and redwoods, but also includes shrubs such as junipers and Japanese yews. Their leaves are simple, often scale-like or needle-like.

The yews we grow in northern Arkansas are primarily selections of Taxus x media, a hybrid of the English yew and the Japanese yew.

The most commonly cultivated yews in the E United States are varieties of the Japanese yew, T. cuspidata. Yews are often trimmed into hedges. Several related evergreen species are also cultivated for ornament, e.g.

This east Asian tree has at least eight English names besides Yew Pine: Yew Podocarp, Longleaf Podocarp, Japanese Podocarp, Disciples-of-Buddha Pine, Buddhist Pine, Pine Yew, Southern Yew, and Japanese Yew.

Japanese Yew - Column shaped shrub that can grow to a height of 30 feet or more. Can grow in areas with a salt spray.
Saucer Magnolia - Works well as a hedge when used in groupings. Will grow to a height of 20 to 30 feet if not pruned.

Not as versatile as other species of yew for ornamental purposes.
Numerous horticultural varieties are available. Canada yew is more cold hardy than English yew (Taxus baccata) or Japanese yew (Taxuscuspidata), which are also used for ornamentals.

200 Irish yews from cuttings of plants that originated at Muckross House, Ireland, form the Yew Allee at Filoli in Woodside. The yews planted as a hedge on Serra Mall along the Lou Henry Hoover Building are cultivars of T. cuspidata, Japanese yew.
