Johnny-Jump-Ups (Viola cornuta, Viola tricolor): Johnny-jump-ups have much smaller flowers than pansies. They flower heavily and are more heat-resistant than pansies. Johnny-jump-ups are ideal for planting around bulbs and larger flowers.

 


Johnny-jump-ups do just as their common name insists. I grew them in my former garden and they piggybacked in with other plants to the new garden. They tend to fill a void between the spring flower show and the summer flowers in May and June.

From tiny ¾-inch Johnny-jump-ups to giant pansy strains with flowers 5 inches across, Violas are beloved garden flowers.

Pansies are beautiful garden flowers that are usually grown as annuals, although they are technically biennials. They are a member of the genus Viola, making them closely related to violets.

He crossed the native johnny-jump-up (V. tricolor) with a yellow-flowered wildflower (V. lutea) and a blue-flowered Russian violet called V. altacia.

Violets have a distinctive, slightly irregular flower. The pansy and Johnny-jump-ups are members of the Viola genus; if you have seen them, then you will recognize other flowers of this group.

Viola, Pansy, Johnny-Jump-Up?
Viola is the name of a genus containing about 500 different species. Most of the violas cultivated in gardens are grown as annuals or short-lived perennials. However, many will self-seed and give you years of delight.
