Mountain Laurel
Grown for their clusters of showy, cuplike flowers, these North American evergreen shrubs grow well in naturalized woodland areas. Plant in combination with rhododendrons or azaleas.

Kalmia latifolia
( Bullseye Mountain Laurel )
This bushy eastern native shrub, which is grown for its showy flowers, is best suited in an informal border or woodland setting. Leaves are oval, dark green, glossy, to 5 inches long.

There are now exist many improved Kalmia latifolia cultivars thanks to the efforts of Richard Jaynes, a Connecticut plant breeder. He has introduced dozens of new cultivars, including plants with dwarf habits and highly colored blooms.

This broadleaf evergreen shrub grows to a height of 12 to 15 feet and spreads to 12 feet. The growth rate is less than 12 inches a year. Mountain laurel requires an acid, well-aerated soil.

All three of these are in the laurel family. In the West Indies, "bay leaf" refers to the bay rum tree (Pimenta racemosa), in the Myrtaceae. Note that the unrelated mountain laurel (Kalmia latifolia), in the Ericaceae, has poisonous leaves.
