Kniphofia or Hot Poker are similar to Foxtails (Eremurus spp.) and make numerous tubular flowers on showy and ornamental tall flower stalks from a perennial fleshy rootstock. They have nice, grass like foliage in dense rosettes.

Kniphofia 'Shining Sceptre' (Red Hot Poker) - This is a perennial that forms dense clumps of blue-green arching grass-like foliage to 1-2 feet tall by 2 feet wide.

Distinctive border perennial with rose-red, fading to white, flower spikes on erect stems. Leaves are narrow, long, and grasslike.

Kniphofia uvaria is one of the parents of the many hybrid Kniphofia now available, and these have mostly replaced this species in gardens.

My great-grandmother had red-hot-pokers (Kniphofia uvaria) at the head of a long dirt lane beside a boulder.

Cultural Practices:
The Kniphofia needs a soil rich in organic matter, along with excellent drainage. In the colder areas of its range, mulch the roots in winter. It needs abundant moisture during its growing period.

KNIPHOFIA Red-hot pokers. Their English name describes them well. They have long narrow spreading leaves and long spikes of flowers which when in bloom resemble torches or pokers. The height is 1 to 1.
