Bearded Knotweed is an erect annual herb, 30-60 cm tall, sometimes prostrate simple-branched, annual, herb. Stem is hairless, lineolate- grooved. Leaves are 1.5-15 x 0.25-3.

Japanese knotweed was introduced from Japan in 1825 as an ornamental plant. The plant is not unattractive but its rapid annual growth and relentless spread, allows it to easily overwhelm other garden plants.

Genus Polygonum, the Knotweeds or Smartweeds, a highly variable genus, which includes annual or perennial forbs and shrubs. Some species are viney. The leaves are usually simple and alternate.

Weed Control: Apply postemergence herbicides as needed for control of summer annual and perennial broadleaf weeds such as knotweed and spurge. Use Vantage T&O (sethoxydim) to control grassy weeds such as crabgrass and goosegrass.

When gardeners talk about using seaweed on their plants, they are usually referring to a brown algae, specifically the one known as knotweed or rockweed (Ascophyllum nodosum).

Persicaria polymorpha is sometimes confused with Polygonum cuspidatum or Japanese Knotweed, which is considered an invasive. I haven't seen anything to suggest that Persicaria polymorpha should be grown with caution, but please let me know if you do.
