Tall Larkspur
Wow! A blue-flowered Delphinium for bright to average shade and it is native to the woodland glades from Alabama to Pennsylvania. Ours came to us thanks to the generosity of the Holden Arboretum in Kirtland, Ohio.

Larkspurs are cottage garden favorites that grow exceedingly well in our maritime Pacific Northwest climate, as long as we attend to their watering needs during our annual summer drought. The larkspurs actually prefer our milder, cooler climate.

Larkspur are started from seed. Directly seed Larkspur into your flower garden after all danger of frost.
Sow seeds early in the season and cover lightly with 1/8" of garden soil. Space them 4 inches apart and thin seedlings to 10-12 inches apart.

SIGNS: Larkspur is primarily a problem in western ranges, especially with cattle. Apparently, the plant is palatable, which increases the risk of clinical toxicosis.

LARKSPURS Flower July-September. Two colours, rose scarlet and deep blue go well together.
LOBELIA Flower all the summer. Buy plants or raise in the greenhouse.
NASTURTIUMS Flower all the summer. Use dwarf varieties.

Larkspur and other annuals can be transplanted directly into the garden. If the weather is too unfavorable and the growing season is not really underway, wait another week or plant them out with a little protective covering.

Usage
Unlike the perennial delphiniums, the annual larkspurs do not require staking.
