Description
Waxleaf Ligustrum is an evergreen shrub with an upright, dense, and vigorous growth habit. This shrub makes a nice sheared hedge but can also be used as a small tree if trimmed up.

Formerly widely planted as a street tree in Palo Alto, the glossy privet may be seen on Alvarado Row near Esplanada Way, along most of Cedro Way, and in many older homes.

This variety of variegated privet has better color, more white-cream and green, versus an overall gray look of the more common variety.

Ligustrum spp. are perennial shrubs that can grow up to 16 feet in height. Ligustrum bark is tan to gray in color with a smooth texture. Leaves are elliptic to ovate in shape, oppositely arranged on twigs.

Ligustrum is the botanical name of privet, an invaluable shrub for screens and hedges, but there are also other species, some more decorative.

So closely is lilac related to privet that it can be grafted onto privet; botanists once grouped tree lilacs with privets, Ligustrum. Privet flowers look like small white lilacs.

General Information: Ligustrum, or Privet are found in many species and cultivars with a diversity of leaf colors, leaf forms and growth habits. All are tolerant of heavy pruning. The white flowers are attractive during late spring and early summer.

PRIVET, in botany, the vernacular name of Ligustrum, l a genus of Oleaceae, containing about thirty-five species, natives 1 Other vernacular names for the common species are prim, primprint, primwort and primrose.

Of our most used plants...intentional and unintentional, most are from areas outside the US. How about Japanese Holly...or Japanese ligustrum...if these aren't adaptable plants, I don't know what is.

Other cultivated genera include Abeliophyllum, Chionanthus, Fontanesia, Forsythia, Noranhia, Notelaea, Nyctanthes, Osmanthus, Osmarea, Parasyringa, Phillyrea and the privet (Ligustrum).
