L. superbum is a vigorous, stem-rooting true species lily with rhizomatous bulbs, purplish green stems, and linear to lance-shaped leaves, mostly borne in dense whorls.
Lilium pomponium is a species with grass-like leaves and small, nodding, orange-red flowers sporting a light peppering of black spots. Native to the maritime alps of Southern France, it grows in limey, dry, rocky conditions.

Turk's-cap lily flowers have a green star at the center (not visible in the photo), which makes a good identifying mark for this plant.
Many are not in the genus Lilium and thus not true Lilies. Lilium has alternate or whorled leaves. The flowers of this species are drooping as are a few others.
"Splendens" Tiger Lily (Lilium lancifolium var splendens, still often listed under its former name L. tigrinum var splendens) has larger flowers, shorter stature, & fewer speckles than most Tiger Lilies.

Lilium longiflorum eximum. Bermuda Easter Lily. Originally imported from and a native of the Ryukyu Islands of Japan. Japan was the first to dominate the market. Its lily-giving was a firm tradition. Now one of Bermuda's most famous flowers.

Lilium longiflorum, the Easter Lily is native to the Ryukyu Islands of southern Japan. Prior to WWII, Japanese grown Easter Lilies accounted for a large share of the US market.
Lilium candidum, L. Martagon and L. tigrinum succeed in well-drained sandy loam and may with advantage be planted in the herbaceous border, all except candidum being planted at least 6 to 8 inches in depth.
Lilium martagon, L. hansonii, and their hybrids, as well as several North American lilies, bear their leaves in regular whorls around the stem, with gaps between the leaves.
