Locust Tree
By Ann MacDonald

---Synonym---Locust Tree
In common language, the term Acacia is often applied to species of the genus Robinia which also belongs to the family Leguminosae, though to a different section.

Locust tree - see Robinia pseudoacacia
Lords-and-ladies - see Arum
Lupin - see Lupinus
Lupinus (Lupin) - somewhat poisonous
Lysichiton (Skunk cabbage) - poisonous; skin & eye irritant
Mandragora (Mandrake) - poisonous ...

This long narrow clump of black locust trees took root along an old fenceline in Kentucky.
Usage
It is planted widely for wind breaks and erosion control projects.

Young Italian Stone Pines (Pinus pinea) shade a central turf bowl, ringed on two sides with Locust trees (Robinia ambigua 'Idahoensis').

Elders also solve problems of a darker kind, adapting to shady corners between houses (where they grow well, though not as tall) and in the dappled light under birch and locust trees.

the Leguminous family, but is placed in a different section. Robinia Pseud-acacia, or false acacia, is cultivated in the milder parts of Britain, and forms a large tree, with beautiful pea-like blossoms. The tree is sometimes called the locust tree.
