Lombardy Poplars are an introduced species planted across the United States as an ornamental and windbreak. The tree apparently originated in Italy in the early 1700s as a mutation.
Lombardy poplar (Populus nigra 'Italica') is regarded as an environmental weed in the ACT, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia.

The cypresses afford instances of tall and narrow trees similar in habit to Lombardy poplars.
'Capital' - Originally conceived as a substitute for the doomed Lombardy Poplar (Populus nigra 'Italica'), this cultivar is strikingly fastigiate. It grows to 35' tall, but only spreads 10'.
Of the varieties that differ from the type in growth the most distinct are fastigiata or pyramidalis, which is of much the same style of growth as the Lombardy Poplar, but does not grow so tall.
