The loquat is comparable to the apple in many aspects, with a high sugar, acid and pectin content. It is eaten as a fresh fruit and mixes well with other fruits in fresh fruit salads or fruit cups.
Sienna Glow Loquat is a hybid of Eriobotrya deflexa, probably a cross with Majestic Hawthorn and has very similar characteristics to Coppertone Loquat. This is an evergreen shrub with dark glossy green foliage, the new growth is coppery in color.

'Gold Nugget' is a dependable fruiting variety (May to June). Fruit is often injured by low temperatures. This cultivar will grow 15 to 20 feet high, and just as wide, in a sunny location.

General Notes
Japanese Loquat is less-often planted than Bronze Loquat, which has shinier foliage and rarely sets fruit. Its fuzzy leaves often make it look dusty and dirty.

Culture
Light: Full sun for best form and fruit. Can also be grown in shady areas, but flowering will be reduced.
Loquat (Eriobotrya japonica) is widely naturalised in the coastal districts of eastern Australia and also present in some parts of southern Australia.

Loquat. Introduced from Japan by Governor Reid in 1850 as a fruit crop long after it was - and still is - widely cultivated in Southern Europe as a fruit tree and ornamental. Imported to get local birds to stop eating expensive Bermuda citrus.
The loquat should really be used more, the fruit is especially good just eaten out of hand or in poultry casseroles. The plant, too, deserves more attention because it's a lovely hold-leaved green beauty.
