Lupine (Lupinus) - Beautiful annuals, biennials, and perennials, chiefly from N. America. The species in cultivation are few, though the names occurring in catalogues are numerous.

SIGNS: Toxicity in lupine is believed to result primarily from the alkaloid D-lupanine. The signs of lupine poisoning can develop within an hour or may take as long as a day.

Lupines have ornamental flower stalks from a basal rosette with broadly feathered leaves. They are either annual or perennial and native of meadows and open spots in woods throughout regions with a temperate climate.

Lupines attract butterflies. The blossom of the lupines are great for cut flowers.

Wild blue lupine produces hairy seed pods, which ripen in midsummer. The seed pods open forcibly, throwing the seeds a distance of one or two yards in the process.

Carolina Lupine
Clump forming perennial with dense spikes of sulphur yellow in June resemble Baptista or lupines. Clean, compound foliage is attractive late into the season. Very durable and long lived once established. Beautiful cut flower.

A good choice for this duty is annual lupines. It will be beautiful in the garden the first year adding color. In our cool climate, it will flower for six to eight weeks. The added bonus is lupines set nitrogen into the soil that feed the perennials.

The leaves and flowers are similar to those of lupine which is also in the Pea family. I thought this was some type of low growing Lupine before Thomas Hemmerly's book 'Wildflowers of Tthe Central South'(Hemmerly) came out.
