Also called Hardy Macadamia, Chile Nut, and in Spanish Avellano, this native of south Chile and Argentina, is extremely little cultivated or known in the northern hemisphere. Hence this article.

It is closely related to the Macadamia. The leaves are 10 - 25 cm long and 1 - 3 cm wide, tapering at the bases but rounded at the tips, and with slightly wavy margins. They are shiny green and leathery, without hairs.

Walnuts are nutritious, averaging over 6000 calories per kilogram, about the same as for almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews, hazelnuts, macadamias, and pecans.
