The best magnolia for small gardens is the species Magnolia stellata, as it is small-growing with delicate star-shaped flowers in either white or pink. Normally this magnolia is not a tree, but rather a very bushy shrub.

Most magnolias are trees, but Magnolia stellata is a shrub growing slowly to about 9 ft. It is an exceptionally beautiful plant, with rather narrow-petalled white flowers, very freely produced in March and April.

Magnolia sieboldii and Magnolia stellata are smaller erect shrubs with a good size for any garden. All are easily grown and robust plants for any humus rich soil in full sun to partial shade.
Sow autumn to early spring in any rich soil some 1cm/0.

Some authorities consider Magnolia stellata to be a variety of M. kobus, but M. stellata is treated as a separate species in this database.
