There are three species in the genus Swietenia, all native to the New World tropics.
Mountain Mahogany is a very common shrub at altitudes from 5,000-8,000 feet. Numerous light gray stems rise to 9 feet from a densely packed base and then lean outward giving a 4 to 8 foot crown spread.

Petunia-like flowers come in unusual shades -- cream, mahogany, brown -- as well as a wide spectrum from yellows, hot oranges and reds to cool violets and blues. Contrasting veins and marbled patterns accent the petals.
Blooms can be single or double in yellow or orange, often mixed with mahogany red. The foliage is finely cut. Plants grow six to 18 inches tall by eight to 12 inches wide.
When more mature it is tinted and veined; in the Highlands of Scotland it is used for making handsome chairs, and is known as Scottish mahogany.

The rich mahogany and cream colored flowers are very showy and have the fragrance of vanilla chocolate. The flowers are very long lasting. Bloom stalks can reach up to 3 feet (1 m) in height and may need to be staked for support.
