Description
Leatherleaf Mahonia has an upright coarse textured growth habit. The foliage is held in horizontal planes on vertical stems and the leaves can be up to 1' long.

Mahonia bealei is an upright, evergreen shrub. The foliage is dull green to blue-green, presenting a coarse texture. Lightly fragrant, yellow flowers bloom in midspring on 4 inch long, upright racemes.

In my old gardens mahonias grew in deep shade. In my new garden they were found after clearing blackberries away.
The berries are relished by birds. The berries also make a good jelly.

Mahonias only fruit if they can pollinate with nearby specimens of its own species, or with a compatible species, & these two species do cross-pollinate at will.

Mahonias are much loved members of our gardens in winter. This American species is a small shrub (three by five foot) that is ideal for using as an under-planting, in sun or partial shade.

Oregon Grape is an evergreen shrub, not related to the deciduous vine that is original plant called "grape." But its fruit clusters indeed resemble those of small Concord grapes.

Mahonias are a handsome group of shrubs from the barberry family, with large leaves composed of at least three, to many, holly-like leaflets; they bear flowers in bunches of spikes with many small yellow flowers, often sweetly scented.

Mahonia Japonica has large, spiky dark green leaves and lemon-yellow scented flowers in early spring.
New Zealand Flax forms a clump of sword-like leaves that are topped by dark red flower spikes in summer. Variegated leaf type is also available.

Leatherleaf mahonia is almost a signature plant of the South. The broadleaf evergreen foliage is coarse and distinctive. The pinnately compound leaves are composed of nine to thirteen leaflets that are adorned with very sharp teeth at the margins.

Height: to 1 m. Spread: to 1.5 m. Location: full to part shade (full sun in moist soil). Cultivation: peaty, moist, well-drained soil; protect from winter winds.

Berberine, found in gold thread (Coptis chinensis), goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis) and oregon grape root (Mahonia spp.), is a choleretic shown to triple bile secretion for 1.5 hours and is effective against bacteria, yeast and protozoa.

In mature neighborhoods of Texas, shade from trees planted a decade ago creates landscape bare spots that need interesting shade-tolerant shrubs.

Some shade-tolerant perennials especially well suited for Colorado's semi-arid environment are lady's mantle, sweet woodruff and coralbells, and shrubs like mahonia, golden currant and thimbleberry.

Other members of the family are the blue cohosh or papooseroot (Caulophyllum thalictroides), the May apple (genus Podophyllum), and the Oregon grape (Mahonia aquifolium), an evergreen shrub that is the floral emblem of Oregon.
