Mangifera indica is an evergreen tree widely grown in the drier tropics and in continental United States locally in zone 10b for its superb and often very colorful fruit (the "peach of the tropics").

A large evergreen tree from S.E. Asia with a large oval fruit with green skin and sweet orange aromatic pulp. It is eaten fresh. Propagated by seed or grafting.

A fruit to be enjoyed in the shower with a friend. The name mango will bring the same response in any language. Ubiquitous in the tropics, now available in dwarf tree sizes.

Introduced fruit tree with a dense, spreading crown. Leaves: to 8" (20 cm) long, crowded (appear whorled), lanceolate to narrowly elliptical, leathery, evergreen. Bark gray or dark brown, rough.

The chief species, Mangifera indica, is believed to have been cultivated for about 6,000 years. It was introduced into Brazil by Portuguese colonists. Many horticultural varieties have been developed.

Pests and Diseases:
Nattrassia mangiferae is an endemic fungus that is causing problems with our native madronas. Phytophthora cactorum-root rot and cankeris-another possible problem for the tree.

Most other members of the family live in the tropics, with a few representatives cultivated across the southern states, including the Peruvian pepper tree (Schinus), mango (Mangifera) and pistachio (Pistacia).
