(ksä´v) or manioc(mn´k), name for many species of the genus Manihot of the family Euphorbiaceae ( family). The roots, which resemble sweet potatoes and are eaten in much the same way, yield cassava starch, a staple food in the tropics.

Another food plant of enormous importance to tropical America in the present as well as in the past is Manihot utilissima, otherwise known as Manioc, Mandioca, or Yuca, from the tuberous root of which Cassava is prepared.

We do not know why he used the Carib word "Yucca" that had been previously applied as a common name for Manihot esculenta, the Manihot Plant or Cassava.

Known from only a single collection in the Ruvu Forest in the Morogoro District of Tanzania.

Tapioca (i.e.: tapioca pudding) is made from the starchy roots of Manihot. The Mexican jumping bean (Sebastiana) is another member of the family; the "jumping" is caused by the rapid movements of a moth larvae inside the seed.
