Maple decline is a term describing loss of vigor and dieback in forests or urban plantings of maple trees. It is not a disease or a syndrome, nor is it contagious or endemic.

Like oak tree planting, maple tree planting may be done in the springtime or the fall, but fall is usually the best season to plant trees.

Heavy maple seed production can cause a silver, red or sugar maple to appear thin and sparse. Seed formation takes precedence over growth and until the seed falls, the amount of leaves on a tree can be small.

LEAVES: Opposite, simple, with 3-5 shallow lobes, coarsely toothed, light green above, pale green to whitish beneath, turning brilliant red or orange in autumn.
TWIGS: Slender, glossy, at first green, later red.

Vine maples are important trees for wildlife. They provide nesting, flower sites and cover for many birds and mammals. The vireo often weave basket-like nests that hang in the forks of the branches.

Your maples will need repotting into a slightly bigger container every couple of years. April or September are ideal months to do this.

Leggy maple growing to 12 feet tall with red leaves. Fall color is scarlet. Upright branching habit, makes this plant interesting even during winter months and an excellent choice for night lighting. Thrives in partial shade and moist soil.

Norway Maples by Kane Hall face the Suzzallo Library. Few species are more widely planted as urban street-trees; every major temperate city where the climate allows displays Norway maple in its downtown area.

Silver maples (Acer saccharinum) are big, fast growing trees capable of reaching 80 feet in height with a spread almost equal their height.

'Caddo' maples, native to southwestern Oklahoma, are well-adapted to heat and drought, and resistant to leaf tatter and scortch common among many maples. The leaves are dark green, leathery, and deeply lobed.

The red maple has a vast distribution. It is present in the eastern half of North America, extending as far north as Quebec, as far west as Texas and as far south as Florida (Kartesz, 1999).

Japanese maples often suffer from exposure to hot sunshine, where the delicate leaves are scorched. The same it true of draughty conditions.

Flowering Maples need a considerable amount of room in which to grow. If left unrestrained, they may grow to ten feet in height and spread, so it is important to not provide too large of a planter, nor to feed this plant too well.

The field maple or hedge maple is distinguished by rather rounded leaf lobes and by small keys, the edges of whose two parts form a straight line. It is a rather small tree and may be cut into a hedge.

These small maples prefer a moist, slightly acidic, moderately fertile soil with a deep mulch. Most varieties of Japanese maples prefer to be grown in partial shade with direct sun occurring during the cooler parts of the day.

Bluish Grey Maple is a deciduous tree, growing up to 25 m tall. Bark is is rather grey. Twigs are red-brown, hairless, peppered with dots. Flower buds are large, prominent in dormant season.
