Marigolds have a very strong odor. Because of this odor many 16th century gardeners thought they were poisonous. The plant was named for the Virgin Mary " "Mary's Gold." Marigolds are native to Mexico.

Marigolds thrive during the long, hot days of summer. They appreciate deep watering during droughts, but overwatering weakens them.
Marigold plants are a very prolific, easy to grow annual flower. Kids love 'em and adults love 'em. Marigolds are available in a variety of colors, including white, yellow, orange, red and mixed colors.

Bur-marigold is an emersed plant occasionally found in the marshes of the peninsula west to the central panhandle of Florida. There are seven species of Bidens in Florida (Wunderlin, 2003).
Pot marigolds are cool-loving annuals, so they are suitable for our cool maritime climate. If properly hardened off with at least a week of 40°F (4°C) temperatures, the plants can tolerate light freezes.
This marigold was long believed to be native to Africa, hence the name.
Cultural Practices:
Space the plants 10 to 18 inches apart (25-45 cm). Deadhead to encourage more flowers. Check for slugs and aphids.
Gem Series marigold is a member of the Signet group which produces flowerheads in lemon-yellow, deep orange, or bright orange with darker markings.
Larger bur-marigold is an annual. In favorable years, it can form dense stands at the edge of ponds.
Mexican Mint Marigold is a native to Central America and has small golden yellow marigold-like flowers. This Marigold will bloom from late summer to early winter providing show stopping color for fall.

Desert Marigold
Desert marigold, Baileya multiradiata, is a yellow wildflower that bears resemblance to the black-eyed Susan. As the name suggests, desert marigolds grow in Arizona, Nevada, Utah and other areas of the American deserts.
