Sweet marjoram (Origanum majorana)
Sweet marjoram: Oval gray green leaves on 1- to 2-foot-tall plants. Milder and more floral than oregano. Perennial in zones 8-24; annual elsewhere.

Marjoram is a very close relative of Oregano, and is a member of the Mint family. It is native to North Africa and Southwest Asia. It thrives in dry, arid regions, and it grows two to four feet.

Marjoram was called amaracum in Latin, which in turn was taken from Greek amarakos [ἀμαράκος]. The origin of the Greek name is not known, but maybe it came from further East, cf. Sanskrit maruva [मरुव] marjoram.

If marjoram grew on a grave it ensured the happiness of the departed. Both the Greeks and the Romans crowned young couples with marjoram. Nowadays, it is almost always used as a culinary flavouring rather than a medicine.

A close relative of oregano, marjoram is very popular herb and is used in casseroles, stuffings, and sauces. Sweet marjoram is a tender perennial that rarely survives even mild winters, so seeds or cuttings must be started each year.

'Acorn Bank' Oregano is a golden marjoram named after Acorn Bank House in Cumbria, England. It has pointy, 1 inch long leaves with margins that curl inward. The flowers are white, with pink stamens. The height and spread are 20 inches.

All in all it would seem that oregano may prove an easier herb for the home gardener than sweet marjoram.

In Western Asia, particularily in Jordan, Lebanon and Israel, a local marjoram relative (Majorana syriaca) is a common flavouring for grilled mutton and also used to flavour breads.
