Althaea officinalis
Marsh mallow is native to Europe; it was brought to America as a medicinal plant. The grayish, velvety leaves are a good way to distinguish this from other mallows.

In traditional medicine marsh mallow flowers have been used in Europe for over 2000 years. Marshmallow (Althaea Officinalis) comes from the Greek word "altho" which means to cure.

My marsh mallow has been in bloom for several weeks and is causing its usual gaudy display. It is covered with bright red blooms as large as a pie pan and is a real show stopper.

Seashore Mallow or officially Virginia Saltmarsh Mallow (Kosteletzkya virginica) has pink flowers similar to the mallows but smaller. It can be over 1meter (3') tall and has leaves that have an elongated heart shape or lance shape and are toothed.
