May Breeze Phlox
A delightful spring blooming native for shade, it carpets the shady border with blooms. 'May Breeze' will spread and fill in around bulbs or perennials that are late to emerge.

'May Blossom' blooms in large cup shaped flowers in purple on white, in the spring. The tulip has been the favored spring bulb for centuries.

Remember, you may get a few 'extras' with your selection: William will find a number of plants with 'William' as part of the variety name plus a number of Camellia x williamsii and some sweet williams.

Salvia x sylvestris 'May Night' will put on a color show all summer with fuzzy dark purple colored flower spikes. To extend the bloom just cut back. May Night Sage can get 18-36" tall and 24" wide at maturity.

Use flowering shoots for stem cuttings, several nodes long, remove flower, and treat with moderate-strength rooting hormone. Plant, keep in good indirect light. May transplant again when roots appear in 2-3 weeks.

'May Queen' Roses (Introduced - 1898) This rambler has a profusion of very double, quartered, 2-inch pink flowers with a fruity fragrance that open fairly flat.

It may be Seattle's most common tree, in terms of sheer numbers. A specimen at Seattle's Carkeek Park is almost 9 1⁄2' thick.

The fern like foliage and the showy plume flowers of False Spirea (Astilbe) make them a favorite summer flowering perennial.

Description:
A coarse stemmed, upright weedy forb found in pastures and disturbed areas. Stems may be red or have red streaks. Leaves are large, usually with stiff, short hair causing them to be coarse to the touch.

May plantings usually suffer from competition with crab grass and other summer lawn weeds as well as from heat and inadequate moisture.

May occur with Eucalyptus tereticornis, Eucalyptus melliodora, Casuarina cunninghamiana subsp. cunninghamiana and Angophora floribunda
Most of the occurrences are on private land and there are no known occurrences in conservation reserves.

A Chorisia insignis in Pasadena is registered as a California Big Tree.

Comments:
Croton needs bright, intense light to keep its outstanding leaf coloration. In lower light areas, the leaves will fade and the plant will be stressed.

We may be northern gardeners, but that's no reason to endure sensory deprivation. Scented roses can be grown in all but the harshest climates.

In May through to June this Geranium is smothered with cheerful cup-shaped magenta flowers with white centres and distinctive veins.

It may not be the most glamorous of winter tasks but cleaning out greenhouses, gutters and water butts is an important one. Cleaning greenhouses, whether glass or plastic, greatly improves the growing environment for plants.

In May when temperatures warm, set (bury) the plant and pot in the flower garden. Choose a protected location where light is filtered. Morning sunshine is satisfactory. Don't be upset if leaves flop over. They soon will become erect.

In May, one-inch long drooping white flowers are produced in pairs under the stem at the juncture of each leaf, creating a delicate, but easily missed, floral display.

It may sprawl a little more than the hybrid teas that we see nowadays, and the flower petals tend to flop this way and that. All in all, it often has a kind of shaggy, unkempt air about it but that's what gives this plant its character.

In May, when our northwest native Rhododendron macrophyllum is in bloom, I love driving through Whidbey Island or around the Kitsap and Olympic Peninsulas, spotting the vast amount of this native species in full regalia.

It may look like a nest of turtle eggs, but Steve says that fresh-dug new potatoes like these are just about the best reason to have a vegetable garden.

This may very well be the perfect houseplant. Put it in an east-facing window for fast growth, or bright north light if you would like to just maintain it. The leaves do collect dust, so wipe them off with a damp paper towel once a month.
