May Apple (Podophyllum) - Distinct perennial herbs, three of which are from Asia and one from N. America. The best known is P.
MAY APPLE. American Mandrake, Racoonberry, Hog-apple, Devil's Apple, Indian Apple, or Wild Lemon, a purgative used in liver complaints.
THORN-APPLE. Datura stramonium, Jamestown Weed, Stinkweed, or Apple of Peru has narcotic, anodyne leaves and seeds.

PODOPHYLLIN, a drug obtained from the rhizome of the American mandrake or may apple, Podophyllum peltatum, an herbaceous perennial belonging to the natural order Berberidaceae, indigenous in woods in Canada and the United States.
Other members of the family are the blue cohosh or papooseroot (Caulophyllum thalictroides), the May apple (genus Podophyllum), and the Oregon grape (Mahonia aquifolium), an evergreen shrub that is the floral emblem of Oregon.
Podophyllum peltatum, or "May Apple," has bold distinctive foliage and usually occurs in large colonies. You have to lift the two large umbrella like leaves to see the 1 1/2" -2" waxy interesting fragrant white flowers.
