Tall Meadow Rue

Tall meadow rue flowers don't have any petals; the white starbursts are made up of stamens. The plant has delicate, finely divided leaves.

Most meadow rue foliage is cut on a pattern resembling a cross between columbine and maidenhair fern. Change the typical light green colour to silvery grey and you have dusty meadow rue (T. flavum ssp. glaucum), a 1.

The Blackfoot Indians powdered the fruits of meadow rue and mixed them with water to be used as a cosmetic on the hair and body. They also made a tea of seeds for chest pains. The fruits were used to spice pemmican, dried meat and broths.

They add a bold, vertical dimension to flower beds, and to shady gardens of ferns, columbine and meadow rue. Use a white flowered variety to brighten up a shady corner.

I wasn't that far of base in thinking that it was a Thalictrum, as the common name for Thalictrum is meadow rue and Trautvetteria's common name is tasselrue . In the description 20 of our 55 counties are cited as its home.

In shade gardens, grow with Columbine, Meadow Rue or Plantain Lily. Tolerate full sun in cool summer climates with abundant moisture. In these areas, combine with Peonies, Delphiniums and Iris. Cut back flower stalks after flowering.
