Watermelons, Colocynth and Bitter Apples are annual herbaceous sprawling or climbing wild cucumbers native of dry areas from South Africa, and North Africa to Iran and India.
For melons, scrape the seeds out of your ripe melons, rinse them in cool water, let them dry thoroughly and store them. For cukes or tomatoes, let some fruits ripen on the vines, then squeeze or scrap the seeds out into a glass jar.
Horned melons are generally eaten raw. Cut open the ripe fruit and sprinkle with sugar, which enhances the flavor considerably. The seeds are edible. The sprouting seed produces a toxic substance in its embryo.

Gourds (Cucurbita species) are very closely related to cucumbers, squash and melons. They have a growing season of anywhere from 120-180 days, so you will want to get them started as early as possible.
Native to tropical Africa, Watermelons like long, hot summers where day temperatures reach at least 80º F and night coolness does not fall below 55º F.

Oranges. Once, at Par-la-Ville Park - and other places - were orange orchards, introduced to Bermuda from England in 1614. Some 40,000 boxes were shipped to Boston, MA alone in one year.
The melons themselves are green-fleshed and with bright yellow skin when ripe. Melons can be a challenge to grow, so dependant are they on good soil and hot weather. They can be difficult to grow outside the region in which they were developed.
In a small garden, cover individual corn ears or melons with bags taped shut. On fruit trees, place baffles on tree trunks to prevent raccoons from climbing them. Prune overhanging limbs that raccoons can use to launch themselves into the fruit tree.

Watermelons are now extensively cultivated in the United States and are popular also in S Russia. The fleshy, juicy fruit is eaten fresh, the rind is pickled, and in Asia the seeds are eaten.
Most seed companies offer seedless watermelons for their customers. Because seed germination is slow, seedless watermelons are usually grown from transplants. Soil temperature of 85EF is required to assure good germination.
Sow fast-growing tender plants such as courgettes, squashes and pumpkins, cucumbers, French beans, melons and sweetcorn so they are ready for planting in their final positions under glass in late spring or outside in early summer.

Only a few members of the family that also includes melons, squashes and pumpkin are found naturally in the wild here. This one has fruit very unlike the eatable members of the family.

Other family members include watermelons (Citrullus), chayote (Sechium) and the Luffa vegetable sponge. Pumpkin seeds contain alkaloids capable of arresting cell division, useful for certain types of cancer.
Watermelons contain a significant amount of citrulline and after consumption of several kg an elevated concentration is measured in the blood plasma, this could be mistaken for citrullinaemia or other urea cycle disorder.
