Stems and flower stalks short-hairy, calyx lobes entire, and leaves usually hairless. In the Cascades from AK to s. OR and in the Rockies to w. MT.

Sow in July for germination next spring, or start indoors after 4-6 weeks stratification, just covered. Keep moist, in shade, rich and well-drained soil. Self-sows.

Mertensia virginica can also be seen in abundance in the early spring. It is one of our more ephemeral spring plants, not just the flowers, but the whole plant disappears in late spring. But while it's up, its one of our most attractive wildflowers.

Mertensiana is named for Franz Karl Mertens, a German botanist.

Also useful are plants such as the ephemeral Virginia bluebell (Mertensia virginica, syn. Mertensia pulmonarioides, Zone 4), which clumps up and blooms early, April through May, then completely disappears until next year.

Pulmonaria are members of the Boraginaceae family and first cousin to other well-known garden favorites such as myosotis (forget-me-not), brunnera, symphytum, and mertensia (Virginia Bluebell).

In Washington & Oregon it grows successfully alongside Mountain Hemlocks (Tsuga mertensiana). Along the coast of British Columbia to Alaska, it grows amidst Alaska Cedars ( ). In the Rockies it grows with Engelmann Spruce (Picea engelmannii).
