Michelia - Very interesting trees and shrubs of the Magnolia order; mostly from Asia and China. Little known in our gardens as yet, excepting one kind, which is grown in conservatories.

MAGNOLIACEAE (Magnolia family)
This handsome tree has yellow-orange fragrant flowers suitable for perfumery in summer and winter, and sporadically in other seasons.

Michelia figo
( Banana Shrub )
Michelia figo is a medium sized evergreen shrub 6-8' tall, occasionally reaching 15' tall. Leaves are glossy, medium green, 3" long. Blooms first in spring, then sporadically throughout the summer.

The genus Michelia was named by Linnæus to commemorate the Florentine botanist Pier Antonio Micheli (1679-1737). Some 40 to 80 species exist, all in SE Asia, India or Sri Lanka (Ceylon).

Champak चमà¥à¤ªà¤- (Michelia champaca) -- ChampÄ
This beautiful, delightfully scented cream-yellow flower is used often in worship. The tree is grown in temple precincts and is considered particularly sacred to Krishna.

The micropyle is exostomal in the Michelia group of Magnolia. The endexine is lamellate and the columellae fused-granular (Xu & Kirchoff 2008). Nectar is secreted from the exposed surfaces of the carpels in some species of Magnolia.
