TOXICITY RATING: Low to moderate. Milkweeds are unpalatable, and have variable toxicities. Death is not likely unless large quantities are consumed.

The Milkweeds are perennial herbs, shrubs or rarely trees, usually with acrid, milky juice and opposite or sometimes whorled leaves. The flowers are bisexual and regular, typically grouped in clusters.

One of several milkweeds occurring in Michigan, this milkweed species is our most common.

Upright perrenial with narrow dark green leaves, small dark pink flowers in umbels, fruits are 6 inches long with silky seeds. Hardy perrenial for the border.

This one is Florida milkweed. It occasionally is found in wet flatwoods and floodplain forests, from Orlando to Pensacola; it also occurs from Texas to Virginia (Kartesz, 1999). It flowers from spring through summer (Wunderlin, 2003).

The Term 'Green Milkweed' is used for this and the two other species mentioned below.

Swamp Milkweed strengthens the heart in the same way as digitalis and is a quick and certain diuretic. It is given in dropsy as a diuretic in place of digitalis, also in coughs, colds, rheumatism from cold, threatened inflammation of the lungs.

It is also commonly called the butterfly weed, milkweed, and butterfly milkweed. Unlike other milkweeds, the sap is not milky. It is native to U.S., east of the Rocky Mountains. Although, today, it's grown in every state.

WARNING
All milkweeds are poisonous if ingested, and the milky sap is a skin irritant. The butterflies whose caterpillars feed on milkweeds contain the same poisonous glycosides and are poisonous as well.

It's in the Milkweed family, and grows 4-6 ft tall. The flowers are white and inverted, like many milkweeds. It is the seed pods that are showy. They are balloon-like, translucent lime green, and have little spines sticking out.

Another asclepias that is overlooked as a garden plant is Asclepias incarnata or swamp milkweed. With a name like swamp milkweed, it doesn't sound appealing, but that is far from true.

Description:
Swamp Milkweed is best sited in sunny and permanently wet areas, such as the edge of a pond or in a poorly drained area (where it reaches a height of up to three feet), but it also adapts to drier areas.

Blood-flower is not as drought tolerant as other species of milkweeds. Keep the plants uniformly moist, but not saturated. Pinch the tops of the plants to induce a bushy habit and provide more flowering branches.
