Mock Orange, Philadelphus coronarius, thrive in full sun or light shade in almost any soil, but do best in moist but well-drained soil supplemented with peat moss, leaf mold or compost.

Mock Oranges are evergreen woody shrubs to small trees native of subtropical and tropical regions throughout Asia and Australia.

Wild Mock Orange, Sweet Mock Orange
This is a large group of fast-growing, vigorous shrubs with fountainlike shapes. The shrubs produce showy white flowers with orange stamens and a strong fragrance reminiscent of an orange blossom.

Mock orange is an upright, deciduous shrub grown for its very fragrant, creamy white flowers that bloom in early summer. 'Aureus' has golden yellow leaves in spring that turn yellow-green in summer. Use in a shrub border or woodland garden.

Mock orange has no serious pest or disease problems. There is some susceptibility to aphids and leaf miners, the latter being more of a nuisance than a threat.

You might have a mock orange growing in your yard, or if you live far enough south, you might have a hydrangea. Mock orange is a small shrub here in Montana, but the flowers have an incredible aroma.

Meriweather Lewis's Wild Mock Orange
How'd Philadelphus lewisii get the common name "Syringa," which is the scientific name of lilacs? Beats me. Its other common name is Mock Orange (or Meriweather Lewis's Mock Orange).
