Description
Monarda didyma ‘Jacob Cline’ is a natural cross that was discovered in the south by plantsman Don Cline. It has the aromatic foliage and square stems that is common to the mint family.

The name Monarda is after a Spanish doctor, Nicolas Monardes (1493-1588) who, though he never visited the New World, was able to write a herbal and introduce europe to many plants from the Americas.

The leafy bracts under the flowerheads are often tinted with lavender. White bergamot (Monarda clinopodia) looks similar, but the flowers are very pale, and the bracts tinted with white. Both plants have aromatic leaves.

In a gardening newsgroup, a gardener posted her observation that bees were all over her perennials, including her monardas, except for Jacob Kline. Other gardeners chimed in that they also had noticed bees skipping past "Jacob Kline.

MONARDA Sometimes called the Eau de Cologne plant. Has lovely scented leaves and brilliant round cushion-like flowers which have trumpet petals around the edge. Through the middle of one flower another will grow.
