Monkey Puzzle Tree, Bunya Bunya Tree
While they are related to pine trees, their horizontal tiers of stiff branches and many small, pointed, flat or needlelike leaves give them a decidedly different look.
It is strange that this tree received its common name, monkey puzzle tree. The name came about when an Englishman commented what a puzzle it would be for a monkey to try to climb the conifer.

Monkey puzzle tree, whose nuts are eaten in Chile, and a Brazilian tree whose seeds are planted by tapirs, are South American species of Araucaria.
Usage
Monkey puzzle tree, with its distinctive silhouette, is an elegant specimen for large landscapes, parks and avenues. It is very tolerant of winds and salt spray, and a group would make an excellent windbreak for a coastal landscape.
Araucaria araucana: monkey puzzle tree - A large, spreading tree, growing to 80 ft. and 30-40 ft. wide. Has two inch needles and branches which grow in a whorled pattern.
