The first Moss rose apparently emerged as a sport from a Centifolia prior to the mid eighteenth century.

 


Moss rose had one flaw that was not adequately resolved until the 1980s. In nature, the plant is a morning bloomer, with blooms closing by midday as the heat arrives.

Moss Rose grows just four to six inches tall. Place it in the front of your flower garden. Try planting Moss Rose as border edging, in rock gardens, as bedding plants or ground cover. They also look good in containers and hanging pots.

Moss rose plants are widely available in the spring. They're also easy to start from seed. Start them directly outdoors around the last frost date. Rake the soil surface and sow the seeds without covering them.

The Moss roses are based on a mutation of Rosa centifolia, the Provence or cabbage rose, some with Damask roses as another parent.

Moss rose makes a beautiful ground cover in a dry or rocky area, although it cannot be walked on. Use moss rose as edging at the front of borders or in the cracks in a rock wall, or the spaces between stepping stones.

The fiery red blooms of 'Etna' moss rose (mid-1800s, Zone 5) pair nicely with the dark blue 'Kent Belle' bellflower. The double flowers are deeply perfumed and embellished with tiny, soft, camphor-scented bristles.

Great for sun-drenched gardens, Moss Rose is a long-blooming, low-growing annual ground cover. Small red, pink, yellow, orange or white rose-shaped flowers open in the morning and close by afternoon, so they are not good cut flowers.

Moss rose grows well in poor, sandy or gravelly soils. The soil must be very well-drained. Drought tolerant, but flowers best with regular watering. Don't water with overhead irrigation, which can damage the flowers.

Moss roses such as 'Blanc de Quatre Saison' feature hairy growths on the flower buds and sepal that remind me of Spanish moss hanging from a live oak. But my favorite class is the Albas.
