American Mountain Ash, Dogberry
Decorative and tough, Mountain Ash's scattered flower clusters yield colorful hanging fruits. The red, yellow, orange, pink and white fruit is a treat for birds. In fall, their fernlike foliage turns orange to red.

The rowan tree, or mountain ash, is a common sight across the woodlands and the gardens of Europe and has a long tradition of human use.

Of the Sorbus section the common Mountain Ash (P. Aucuparia) is a familiar example, but it is too common to need description. There is a kind with yellow berries, another kind with weeping branches, and a third of erect growth.

A mountain ash (E. regnans) in Tasmania was carefully measured at 321 feet in 1956 and one in Victoria at 374 feet in 1981. Even greater heights were reported in the 19th century for trees that were felled and measured by pacing.

Long a landscape favorite, mountain ash is an upright tree growing 25 - 40 feet high with a rounded open crown. In late spring it covers itself with clusters of delicate white flowers.

Rowan Trees are uncommon in the mountains of the Four Corners area but are commonly planted as home ornamentals and along city streets.

At the northeast corner of Thomson Hall is a small relative of the common mountain ash: the Swedish Whitebeam. The leaves are green on top and pale grey and hairy underneath.

This Asian species, native of western & central China, just like our own native Western Mountain Ash, does have minor drawbacks. They're not notably longlived trees, 25 to 50 years on average, so it's not a tree for posterity.

Due to our summer climate in Raleigh, NC, it is virtually impossible to grow this plant in the south. Another example is the beautiful mountain ash (Sorbus sp.) with the bright red berries in the fall.

Its official cultivar name is 'Cimmzam'. And the Red Cascade™ mountain ash patented in 1977 (PP 4157) as Sorbus tianschanica is actually a Sorbus americana. Its official cultivar name is 'Dwarfcrown'.

Prunus spinosa - the Blackthorn or Sloe Tree.
Salix - The willow family. Will grow with roots in water.
Sorbus aucuparia types - The Mountain Ash. Damp but well drained soil is ok, but not permanently wet.

If possible, remove other plants that may serve as hosts for the disease, including wild apples, hawthorns, mountain ash, and cotoneaster hedges. Prune out fire blight cankers in the winter when trees are dormant.
