Mountain Laurel (Kalmia) - The Kalmias are among the most beautiful of N. American shrubs, evergreen in foliage and charming in flower.

Mountain Laurel is a flowering evergreen shrub that is native to the mountainous regions of eastern United States. In the spring its large white flower balls are visible deep in the forest and along roadsides.

This broadleaf evergreen shrub grows to a height of 12 to 15 feet and spreads to 12 feet. The growth rate is less than 12 inches a year. Mountain laurel requires an acid, well-aerated soil.

Other familiar members of this family include the heaths and heathers (Erica and Calluna) mountain laurel (Kalmia), lily-of-the-valley shrub (Pieris), cranberry (Vaccinium) , Leucothe and Andromeda.

SIGNS: These plants, as well as mountain laurel (Kalmia spp.) contain grayanotoxins (glycosides) which affect the gastroenteric (stomach and intestines) and cardiovascular systems. The older name for this toxin was andromedotoxin.

It's an excellent shrub for the natural or woodland garden. It's cultural requirements are similar to those of azaleas, rhododendrons, mountain laurels and blueberries. Pipestem responds well to very heavy pruning, and can be maintained as a hedge.
