Additional Comments: Dioscorides recommended Mullein for scorpion stings, eye complaints, toothache tonsillitis and coughs. It was also traditionally taken for wasting diseases such as tuberculosis.

Mulleins are usually growing as biennials, some species have a semiperennial to perennial habit and make some amazingly large inflorescences emerging from a large basal leaf rosette.

This dwarf mullein is just 15 inches tall but it packs a big floral punch. In early spring, violet-purple flowers with dark purple anthers emerge unfazed by late frosts and continue into the summer.

Mullein is a European native plant which was used by the Druids in medicinal remedies. When this species is grouped in a mass planting or used as a background plant in a summer border, it creates a beautiful effect.

There are drought-tolerant wildflowers such as black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta), butterfly weed (Asclepias tuberosa) and wooly mullein (Verbascum thapsis).

So I found a dignified, contained setting for the geraniums, and I allowed the larkspur to shack up with a shaggy-leaved, Fabio-on-acid mullein that showed up a few months ago.
