Despite that here in the Northwest one can obtain a seed-grown variety called "Myrobalan," virtually all pre-spring bareroot offerings are grafted. In the USA the majority of plums are grafted onto tough & hardy Prunus cerasifera rootstock.

Roses on Rosa 'Laxa', apples on M27, cherries on 'Colt' and plums on Myrobalan B show more resistance than those on other commonly used rootstocks. Roses on Rosa canina and flowering cherries on Prunus avium are more susceptible.

Several Asian types are known as myrobalan, a name applied also to the cherry plum, with which flowering almonds are sometimes hybridized. The beauty of the almond in bud, blossom, and fruit gave motif to sacred and ornamental carving.
