Nasturtium (Watercress)
Watercress has become rare in its habitats throughout Europe. An easily cultivated aquatic, semiperennial aromatic herb with a distinct, typical cress like mild-spicy flavor.

Nasturtium (literally "nose-twister" or "nose-tweaker"), as a common name, refers to a genus of roughly 80 species of annual and perennial herbaceous flowering plants Tropaeolum ("Trophy"), one of three genera in the family Tropaeolaceae.

Nasturtiums grow very well in poor soils, and like dry soils. So you can plant these versatile flowers in areas where other flowers and vegetables would fare poorly.

Tropaeolum majus - Nasturtium - Tropaeolaceae
Tropaeolum majus, or Nasturtium, is a fast growing climbing annual native to the Andes Mountains in South America. The bright green leaves are peltate and from 2-7 inches (5-17.5 cm) across.

These annuals and tender perennials are native to Central and South America. Their leaves are notably round, palmately-lobed, or palmate.

Variegatus is a trailing with variegated leaves and red or orange flowers. In general, majus is a strong-growing, annual climber with rounded to kidney-shaped, wavey-margined, light green leaves.

Nasturtium (Tropaeolum). 5-15 feet. A few nasturtiums truly climb. T. majus 'Fordhook Favorite' is a vigorous climber, as is T. peregrinum, often called canary bird flower because of its feathery bright yellow flowers.

The true nasturtium or Indian Cress cultivated in gardens as a creeper has brilliant orange-red flowers and produces the seeds which serve as a substitute for capers in pickles.

Bauhinia punctata. Nasturtium Bauhinia. Spreading, deciduous, woody shrub, up to 10 feet high. Wild. Prolific. Colorful blooms from peach to deep red, about 3 inches across. Good nectar plant for butterflies.

Larger than peas, the seeds of nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus) are easy to pick up and sow. We usually start this frost-sensitive annual in small pots indoors in mid-May and set plants out during the first week of June.

The soft black seeds in the central cavity also are edible, tasting a little like watercress or nasturtium. Ripe papayas are soft and have a thin skin. In most cases the papayas available in grocery stores were picked while still hard and unripe.

Such plants, as well as the familiar round-leaved nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus), ignite our mouths and noses with burning sensations that we term as hot. Think horseradish. But they do not numb us, nor are their effects limited to our mouths.

Ornamental examples include Eschscholzia (Californian poppies), Tropaeolum majus (nasturtiums), Limnanthes douglasii (poached egg flower), Iberis umbellata (candytuft), Helianthus annuus (sunflower), ...

If eaten in large amounts daily, it can be mildly toxic, suppressing proper calcium absorption; but a few leaves now & then, & a couple of the flowers together with flowers from a nasturtium patch, can really brighten up a dinner salad, ...

Some of the plants found here are candytuft, garden verbena, heliotrope, re-blooming iris, marigold, Mexican evening primrose, nasturtium, ornamental flowering tobacco, petunia, red valerian, snow-in-summer, sweet alyssum, and wallflower.

Nasturtiums thrive in even poor soil and will fill in the front of the border in no time. Larkspur, snapdragons or cosmos can be lovely mid-border. There are many fast growing annuals to choose from, and many will bloom all summer if deadheaded.

If climbing nasturtiums (Tropaeolum majus) are grown into the tree they can repel woolly aphis[18, 201]. Apples lose their flavour if they are stored with potatoes[18].
