or catmint, strong-scented perennial herb (Nepeta cataria) of the family Labiatae ( family), native to Europe and Asia but naturalized in the United States.

Perennial, Biennial, Nepeta cataria
Yes it true! Cats love Catnip! There was a time I did not believe it myself, and thought it was just a fictional joke in cartoons. They love to nip the leaves. They love to roll in it.

Examples include Nepeta Cataria, and several species of kiwi vine, such as Actinidia polygama. If you care to grow Cat Thyme, you may need to containerize it or fence it until it becomes firmly rooted, lest cats destroy it.

Aromatic oils and the monoterpene, nepetalactone, cause the signs. Cats will rub and sometime ingest the plant, and then act "drunk" or "wild" for up to an hour or more. No lasting toxicity is reported.

Catnip, a hardy perennial also known as Nepeta cataria, is easy to grow in the home garden and thrives in USDA hardiness zones 3 through 9 with only minimal care.
