Symphyotrichum novae-angliae (Aster novae-angliae)
Compared to other native asters, New England aster flowers have more rays (around 40) and, usually, more intense purple color.

New England Aster
Tall and majestic, New England Aster rules the prairie in autumn. The deep blue to purple, and sometimes pink flowers are highlights of the late season wildflower garden. Blooms late into the fall, well after the first frosts.

New England asters last as a cut flower for 5-7 days when properly harvested. Cut the stems when ¼ of the flower has opened and place it immediately into water.

New England aster (A. novae-angliae)is a much-hybridized North American species that grows 18 to 48 inches high and spreads 24 to 48 inches. Flowers have 1 ½- to 2- inch wide heads and are good as cut flowers.

Most people are familiar with the Aster novae-angliae, the New England aster, one of the showiest of our native species. Appearing along roadsides and in moist thickets, it's height ranges from two to over eight feet.

Local garden centers and nurseries also stock varieties of New England aster, and many more of the New York aster, also called Michaelmas daisy. New York asters produce one-inch flowers that cover the full range of aster colors.

The most popular variety is the New England Aster (Aster novae-angliae). It's bright 1 1/2 inch flowers bloom prolifically from August through October atop a two to four foot plant.

Among the more showy native species cultivated in North American gardens are the purple New England aster (A. novae-angliae) and the violet or blue New York aster (A. novi-belgii). The China aster is the common aster of florists and flower gardens.
