( New Zealand Spinach )
There are 2 kinds of spinach: the common, most familiar kind which is a hardy annual, and the lesser known New Zealand spinach, which is a tender annual (and really not a true spinach).

New Zealand Spinach is a half-hardy annual, a native of New Zealand, sometimes used as a substitute for Spinach during the summer months, but decidedly inferior to it. It is unrelated to the Spinach, belonging to the Picoideae.

There are four types of spinach often available that include the common spinach, New Zealand spinach, Chinese or Asian spinach, and water spinach. Common spinach has flat thin leaves, thin stalks and a medium green color.

Two heat-tolerant spinach substitutes are New Zealand spinach (Tetragonia tetragonioides, in the Tetragoniaceae), and Malabar spinach (Basella rubra, in the Basellaceae). Both are totally unrelated to spinach, but look a lot like it.
