LEAVES: Opposite, simple, coarsely 5-lobed, 4"-7" wide, milky sap exudes from the broken leaf-stalk.

Norway Maple
Maple trees include a broad spectrum of types, sizes, shapes and foliage. They are evergreen or deciduous, shrubby or lofty, with deeply lobed or finely cut leaves.

Norway Maples by Kane Hall face the Suzzallo Library. Few species are more widely planted as urban street-trees; every major temperate city where the climate allows displays Norway maple in its downtown area.

Norway maple, red maple and sugar maple are the species most commonly affected. The trouble often starts after insect-induced defoliation, which weakens the trees and makes them more susceptible to secondary pathogens.

Aphids infest maples, usually norway maple, and may be numerous at times. High populations can cause leaf drop. Another sign of heavy aphid infestation is honey dew on lower leaves and objects beneath the tree.

Discussion This species is fast-growing, and thus is often planted, though it is not as hardy northward as Norway Maple. In some areas it has escaped and invaded roadsides and woodlands.

Acer Platanoides, the Norway Maple, grows on the mountains of the northern countries of Europe, descending in some parts of Norway to the seashore. It abounds in the north of Poland and Lithuania, and is common through Germany, Switzerland, and Savoy.

Sycamore maple (Acer pseudoplatanus) may be confused with some other weedy introduced species including box elder (Acer negundo ), Japanese maple (Acer palmatum ), Norway maple (Acer platanoides) and London plane (Platanus x acerifolia).

But since Bigleaf maple does not reproduce as readily in shade as do certain other trees, including imported European maples (Norway maple Acer platanoides; and Sycamore maple Acer Pseudoplatanus), it is declining in Seattle.

In mild winter regions, good evergreens are boxwood and acuba. Norway maples are safe in eastern landscapes, but deer devour them out West. Consult regional plant lists compiled by local extension services.
