name applied to members of the family Myristicaceae. The true nutmeg (Myristica fragrans) is an evergreen tree native to the Moluccas but now cultivated elsewhere in the tropics and to a limited extent in S Florida.
Additional Comments: Nutmeg was first brought to Europe from the Banda Islands by the Portuguese around 1512. It gained the reputation of a cure-all and was widely eaten as a tonic. Its hallucinogenic properties were soon discovered.
