The nuts of the tree are rounded but with five flatter sides. It seems to be these nuts that are used as dice in the epic poem Mahabharata.

The nuts develop in a pitted shell surrounded by a fibrous, leathery casing which splits when the nuts ripen in autumn. Nuts can be eaten at this stage but tend to have a rubbery texture.

The nuts produced by shagbark hickory are amongst the sweetest of the hickories, rivaling those of its cousin the pecan. The eastern Indian tribes relished them as a wintertime food.

To me the nuts are not a great treat, but I think it fun to grow a tree related to the cold-tender Macadamia. The tree is adaptable to highly varied soils and sun levels.

The number of nuts varies; a well-cared-for tree may yield 75 to 200 or more annually. The mature fruit as it comes from the tree is encased in a thick, brown fibrous husk.

The more gardened nuts you can get from your garden to add to a store-bought array, the better that'll be for your nutloaf recipe.

INDEHISCENT
A fruit that remains closed at maturity is indehiscent. Nuts, acorns, sunflowers, grains, and maple pods are examples of indehiscent fruits.

Oat can be consumed in its natural state under the form of flakes. In the morning it is recommended to consume half a cup of oat flakes mixed with nuts and fresh fruits.

This is a seed pod from the lotus. Asians eat the seeds of a related species when they are still green and not yet hard. They are similar to uncooked peas. My books say that you can also eat the older seeds like nuts, but it sounds like alot of work.
