Blue oat grass is an evergreen, cool season grass that thrives in our cool, maritime climate of the Pacific Northwest. A native to the western Mediterranean, this plant is very drought tolerant. The roots will rot if drainage is poor.

Variegated Tuber Oat Grass
Although grown as a meadow grass in northern United States regions, Oat Grass is extremely invasive and is naturalized throughout North America. The less invasive variegated type is most commonly grown.

Most ornamental grasses need full sun. Some exceptions are northern oat grass, Japanese forest grass, and sedges. Many cool season grasses which require full sun farther north, will prefer some shade during the hottest part of the day in the South.

Another grass that has never caught on is the dwarf striped tuber oat grass (Arrhenatherum elatius bulbosum Variegatum).
