a) Oats can accumulate excessive amounts of nitrates, especially when heavily fertilized. Many grasses and forages can accumulate toxic levels of nitrates depending upon fertilization practices. This is a serious problem, especially in cattle.
Northern sea oats is a loosely tufted, clump-forming grass with lance-shaped, arching mid-green foliage that turns yellow in winter.

MEDICINAL: Oats are a traditional food for those recovering from an illness. It also supplies necessary fiber in the diet. Oats made into packs and pastes clear up many skin disorders, such as acne.
Sea Oats (Uniola paniculata): This major native Southern beach grass tolerates harsh growing conditions and stabilizes dunes. Gray-green sharp leaves grow 3 to 8 feet tall topped by arching flower stems.

Usage
Sea oats is a handsome ornamental grass, at its best in cultivated beds placed where its nodding seedheads can draw attention. Sea oats is tolerant of salt spray and saline soils.

Northern sea oats is a short grass that does well in shady areas. Its showy, drooping flowers and bamboo-like foliage make it a great accent plant for the garden.
Contraindications: Oats antagonize the antinociceptive effect of morphine and the pressor response to nicotine.

It does well to succeed oats or potatoes, as it requires the soil to be in fresh condition without being too rich. Lands newly broken up from pasture suit it well, as these are generally freer from weeds than those that have been long under tillage.

All of our cereal grains belong to this family, including wheat (Triticum), rice (Oryza), wild rice (Zizania), corn (Zea), oats (Avena), barley (Hordeum), millet (Echinochloa) and rye (Secale).
Native species such as American beachgrass (Ammophila breviligulata) and sea oats (Uniola paniculata) should be planted to protect vulnerable dunes from storm damage and blowouts and to prevent re-colonization by Asiatic sand sedge.
Barley is a cereal grain related to wheat, oats, and rice. Barley seeds (the part of the plant that is highest in nutrition) grow in spikes at the tips of the stems - it resembles wheat.
This species is of potential value in breeding programmes for the cultivated oats (A. sativa), in particular it could pass on pest resistance and drought tolerance. The following notes are based on the general needs of the genus.
