common name for the Oleaceae, a family of trees and shrubs (including climbing forms) of warm temperate climates and of the Old World tropics, especially Asia and the East Indies.
Olives are not entirely hardy in the UK, and will be damaged by temperatures below -10C (14F). So, in colder areas of the country, you can grow olives in large containers.
Olive trees can grow in nutrient-poor, but well-drained soils. It needs full sun for fruit production, but also needs a slight winter chill for the fruit to set. Temperatures below 15F will kill a young tree.
Soils: Olives will grow well on almost any well-drained soil up to pH 8.5 and are tolerant of mild saline conditions.
Olive Trees originate in the Eastern Mediterranean region, extending to South Africa and Western Asia.

It is a member of the olive family (Oleaceae). In early spring, before the new leaves form, purplish buds all along the grey naked branches open into small white four-petaled, almond-scented flowers with yellow stamens.
